Minivelo

As part of my Minor at Rotterdam Mainport Institue, I was asked to design and build a remote controlled sailboat. The hull is made from 0,5 mm thin cherry veneer, which is made waterproof with bees-wax. Rudder and keel are formed and soldered from 0,3 mm brass sheet. The 3 kg keel bulb is turned from a solid piece of brass. The mast is made from a 10mm aluminium tube and the sails are from recycled nylon fabric.

At Willem de Koning academy I once had the assignment to have a look at Schouwburgplein in Rotterdam, and to think about a future vision and design of this public space. To visualise my design, I focused on building a 1:100 model.

Futureproof public space design must deal with a climate that is heating up rapidly and an increase in heavy rainfall that threatens to flood our cities.

Cars will hopefully disappear from our citys soon, and to accelerate that, I propose to invest in next level bicycle infrastructure.

The new Schouwburgplein is created by substracting parts of the former underground parking garage.

The lowest floor and the outer walls form a large basin that acts as an open rainwater collection tank that also gives citizens a place to cool down on the hot summer days.

The deconstruction forms a multilayerd landscape that hosts a floating stage for performances, gathering spaces and a sheltered walks where people can enjoy the fresh air without getting wet when it is raining.

To celebrate Adrian Geuzes original design of the square, the characteristic light posts are kept in place, and the wood and metall flooring is reused to create a diverse arrangement of stairs, briges, and piers along the water.

SCHOUWBURGPLAS

The Netherlands are flat, but it can get quite windy sometimes. In other words: Perfect conditions for taking the cargo bike on a sailing trip. Mounting the an old sail from a childrens sailboat on the bike took less than 20 minutes, and we were off for a three day round-tour through Zeeland. It all worked so well that we are now confused that this is not a standard thing that people do since forever.

SAILBIKE

The station day was an event that celebrated the process of making. Instead of normal lessons, students at the Willem de Kooning Academy could explore the possibilities of the schools workshops, as well as a "makers market", that shows how technology and materials can be used in unexpected ways. I was asked to design the space for the makers market, which gave me the chance to play around with the school furniture.

The Willem de Kooning Academy has these cool frames.

They are normally used as walls or shelves for presentations.

What else could be possible?

STATION DAY EXHIBITION

Once upon a time I knotted myself a little winter residence for a few days of retreat. The lightweight structure was woven off-site before it was rigged into the trees. The use of autumn leaves for insulation, combined with a layer of the first snow created a cozy shelter that was well hidden in the winter forrest. I slept most comfortably on the woven platform, read a lot and watched the wild boars roaming through the woods, before packing everything up again. By working with one continuous 60m rope and tying all knots on a bight, cutting the rope was avoided, so that the full length can be reused.

FLOATING FOREST SHELTER

At the heart of the Swiss Alps, international slackliners meet for the annual Transalp Waterline Tour. To add to the stunning scenery at Lake Cauma this striking installation was born. It took 3 days to install the 1000m of slackline webbing and the 24 hammocks.
